I am glad to see that the pre-announced theme competition got promoted on the Weblog Tools Collection - but I just have to make clear, that the post quoted only is a pre-announcement.
Currently I am trying to get hold on a lot of sponsors, so that the prize pool will be as great as possible. I am also putting a lot of time into deciding what categories should be, and writing down the rules etc.
There will be some time before the launch, but I also think that is the best thing for the community. There has been arranged two not-so-successful competitions in the near past, and before this one is launched I hope that those will be forgotten and we all are ready to take WordPress theming the next step up the ladder, and let the community have what they deserve.
This do mean that the people, who already have begun coding and designing for the competition has to be a little more patient. If you already have a theme ready, use the time to the launch to make it even better - theme options, widgetizing, optimizing code etc. Again, patience, because the competition will not launch tomorrow, nor will it launch in a week - I am putting a lot of time into making it as good as possible, and I will assure you all that it is worth the wait.
The details is secret for now, but I might tip some people on a little news from time to time, so be sure you surf around all the fantastic WordPress community sites ;)

MHC-in-the-box » A new WordPress theme competition in the works Says:
[…] Another WordPress theme competition is being put together for the WP theming community by Thomas Silkjlr. Thomas is putting together sponsors so prizes can be enticing for anyone putting sweat and tears into their new designs that will be submitted for the contest. Details are available here and those who are interested are asked to visit WordPress news websites (like Weblog Tools, WordPress Station or WordPress Planet) and/or surf to the undersigned periodically till it is official. suggestion: as you’re currently writing the categories and criteria, perhaps you should poll the wordpress.com forums (and possibly .org). i’m sure you’ll get a lot of stupid answers, but it might be a way for people to get what they were hoping for when the winners are announced.

If I may suggest some categories: best fluid design (there are too few fluid designs) and best customizable design. And perhaps a special prize for the design with the best theme preferences screen in the admin section. K2 has really set a trend I hope.
I think adding one or two of this kind of categories will prevent that you get 70% 2-column fixed width beautiful but rigid design, 20% 3 column fixed width ‘look mum it is a phpnuke clone’ kind of design and 10 misc. design.
I’d like to see something new, something flexible, something that allows users more control.
But I’d like the 2-column fixed width beautiful but rigid design probably just as much ;-)
Good initiative!

I don’t much care what categories there are specifically, as long as they’re not all about aesthetics or how many useless Ajax effects one can squeeze into a theme.
You may have to be very specific in drawing the line about K2 mods and such… a lot of “K2 mods” are much more unique than many of the other themes. Themes are kinda like music these days… everything to some extent is a derivation of other things. But then, that’s what’s great about this community… constantly improving by sharing, collaborating, and building on each other’s work.
Granted, I have ideas that I’ve never seen in a single WP theme before, but unless you REALLY take your time with this competition I don’t see myself having time to work on anything for myself for a while really. :(
Ah well, maybe next time!
Good luck,
Jā

I own a record label, and use wordpress for my site, blog, and all my artists’ sites. I’d be happy to donate some of our music (physical CDs) to the prize pool.
Also, you should have a category for ‘Site Templates’. That is templates that are friendly to top level (or even nested) Pages, and treat the posts like the ‘News’ section… Blix Theme is a good example of that.

A category for CMS-type WP themes would be nice since Wordpress is becoming an ever more popular alternative to traditional CMS like Joomla etc.
I’d also love to see a category that only features semantic themes where appearance is completely defined in CSS file with almost no hard-coded appearance settings at all. If there were more of them around I suspect more people would design original themes as a matter of course.

Yes, I agree. Something for a highly semantic theme. Here, here!
